Judges Updates

May 21, 2018

The goal of the Women’s Technical Committee is to present a fair testing process for the success of all judges. Here are some helpful points:

*Appendix 15- “Not up to the Competitive Level” Composition Deductions

Written Exam- Concentrate on the upper and lower parameters with the information for no deduction and maximum deductions.

Practical Exam- Apply all Appendix 15 deductions. The Appendix items can be brought into the exam along with other materials. All appendix materials are available on the USA Gymnastics web site.

  • Practical Exam Scoring – Scoring booklets will be given to all examinees, including a cover sheet with a space for Judges’ name and ID (Pro) number. Additional blank paper will also be made available. Judges may also use their own scoring sheets, provided their name is on them and they are clearly labeled as to which event and the number of the exercise scored. These personal sheets will be turned in, stapled to the Practical exam booklet.
  • Symbols-All symbols on the written exam will have a written description.
  • No vault values need to be memorized with their numbers and values.
  • No electronic devices are allowed for the closed and open written exam or for the practical exam. Ex. Cell phones, Ipad, tablet, computers, electronic watches.
  • Beam- 2.201- Split leap forward has a value part change to a B. A straight-leg brush of the lead (front) leg is required. No stag or bending (developé) of the lead leg is allowed.

Thank you and good luck for a successful testing process.

Regional Application Form for Levels 7-10 Region 5 Championships – Last year the number of Level Ten judging sessions was added with NCAA Meets being added for this coming year. Both of these items show judging at a high level in our sport. Please keep track of these so that you can accurately report these next year. It will be helpful for you to keep the number of judgements you do for all Level 10 and NCAA meets that you judge for 2017-2018. The weight of this information will be determined at a late date. Being a meet referee counts as judging for the criteria listed above. All of these Level 10 and NCAA judgments show our involvement at the highest level of competitions.

Region 5 Training Camps – Judges are encouraged to attend our training camps to observe, offer judging comments or lead Sunday judging rotations. Judges no longer will be assigned to a camp/event but will be assigned to the judging rotations. This information will still be part of the PIF-Professional Involvement Form to show involvement.

J416: Level 9 Composition

J416: Level 9 Composition is an online video course. The goal of this course is to train judges and coaches to identify compositional requirements for Level 9 Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise and to apply deductions correctly. Starting with a review of the compositional considerations, the course then presents theoretical routines (in symbols) to review the appropriate deductions, and then 6-8 routine videos are followed by symbols and deductions.

Once the course is complete, Judges are able to print a one-time/one-hour of CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credit.

ONLINE Courses That Can Qualify for CPE Clinic Credits

I would like to remind you that whenever a Clinic (coaching and/or judging) is conducted in your state or region (excluding Regional Congresses), a Judging Accreditation CPE Clinic Approval form must be completed and sent to me. The clinic must also be sanctioned. If it is a state function, then the SACC and SJD must both approve the clinicians and sign the form. If it is a clinic offered to your region, then the RJD and either the RTCC or RACC should sign the approval form.

The National office keeps the forms on file as a record of clinics that can be used for CPE credit. When audits are done in the Fall, if anyone indicates they earned clinic credits from a state/regional clinic, then I verify by checking the CPE Approval forms to see if that clinic was approved and eligible for CPE credits. I am attaching the Clinic Approval form as well.
