Women’s
Program is excited to announce its first annual “Future Collegiate
Gymnasts Showcase” to be conducted in conjunction with the 2004
Jr. Olympic Nationals in Kissimmee, Florida. We hope that this
event will encourage your team to bring any additional eligible
Level 9 and 10 athletes to enjoy the National Championships. They
can cheer on their teammates and Regional friends who do qualify and
then have the opportunity on Monday, May 3rd to show off
their own gymnastics abilities at the “Showcase.”
Collegiate
coaches typically are present at JO Nationals to observe the high
school age athletes. This year they will stay one more day to get an
up-close look at so many other wonderfully talented athletes. This
is a great opportunity for your gymnasts to catch the eye of the
collegiate coaches. Please be aware that those athletes who compete
at Nationals may also register for this event. Perhaps they’d like
to show off new skills they’ve been working on but did not include
in their routine at Nationals due to lack of consistency.
Please check
out our website at http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/women/2004/collegebound.html
for more specific information and online registration. Each athlete
must complete the Athlete information form and register online. This
info will be compiled and put on a CD for all the collegiate coaches
who have registered.
Club coaches
attending the “Showcase” with an athlete are invited to a Sunday
night “Wine & Cheese mixer” with the collegiate coaches in
order to find out more about their university and its gymnastics
program.
Don’t miss
it!! Here’s your chance to assist your athlete in finding the
right collegiate program.
Dear Ms. Kelly,
My name is Tandra Knight and I am a
Towson University Gymnastics Alumni (1991) and Towson Athletic Hall
of Fame Member. Unfortunately, Towson University's new
president, Dr. Robert Caret, has decided to eliminate the Women's
Gymnastics Program starting next season. I am devastated that
this may be the end of such a highly successful athletic and
academic gymnastics program. For being such a small university
on the east coast, Towson has proven itself to be one of the top
programs in the nation for the past 20 years. Coach Richard
& Lynda Filbert have been nothing short of brilliant with their
recruiting and development of the gymnastics program, producing
All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, Conference Championships and
NCAA Regional and National Appearances. It would be a shame to
watch Towson University's only nationally recognized sports program
disappear. However, as many of us close to collegiate gymnastics
know, our sport is endangered. Apparently Dr. Caret and,
athletic director, Dr. Wayne Edwards would rather focus their
attention and money on Men's Football and Basketball, two programs
at Towson that have never had success even at the local level.
To comply with title IX they have also decided to drop Men's
Swimming and Diving, and possibly Track & Field, but will add
Women's Golf. This is why we need your help. Several alumni
and I are organizing a massive letter/e-mail writing campaign to
gather support to Save Towson Gymnastics! We have already
involved the local media, appearing on Channel 11 news last Friday
night and a sports talk radio program tonight. Anyone across
the country can listen or call-in to the radio show tonight by
tuning in to 1090 AM (Baltimore) or logging on to www.wbal.com
at 7:30 pm and clicking on the "Listen Live" icon in the
right hand corner (takes a few minutes to upload). Listeners
can call-in to 410-467-WBAL or 1-800-767-WBAL. I know this is a lot
to ask, but could you be so kind as to forward this e-mail and
attached information to as many gymnastics friends that you
know. We need everyone to become involved and show their
support of Tiger Gymnastics by e-mailing Dr. Robert Caret,
President, rcaret@towson.edu
and Dr. Wayne Edwards, wedwards@towson.edu or snail-mailing to
Towson University, 8000 York Road, Towson, MD 21252. I have attached
a flyer which highlights some of the many athletic and academic
achievements of Towson's Gymnastics Program. We have also set
up an e-mail address, savetowsongymnastics@hotmail.com , for people
to ask questions or share their comments and suggestions.
Please help us Save Towson University Tiger Gymnastics!
Anything you can do would be much appreciated.
Thank you so much,
Tandra (Tandy) Knight, tandra_k@hotmail.com

UPDATE:
Hi all:
Maria and Mama left at 3:00am Nevada time on the air ambulance to
RIC.
So you know where to direct your prayers and energy, she will be at:
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago
345 E. Superior St.
Chicago, IL 60611
Mama might be staying in the city. Will let you know more when I do.
Thanks again for support and prayers. Maria is progressing every
day.
Any messages? I am headed down there this afternoon...
my love and prayers to you all,
megan
UPDATE:
Hi All;
Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers for my little
sister Maria.
I am here at the hospital in Reno, watching miracles happen every
day. They
thought she would die, they thought she would have brain damage,
they
thought she would never feel or move again. So far, with all the
hope and
prayers, Maria has beat all odds. She is here, she is herself and
she is
improving every day: Yesterday, she was breathing on her own for
15 hours.
She has movement in her left leg, she is starting to be able to
make a fist
with her left hand and these movements are slowly migrating to her
right
side. They have determined that the cord was not severed, just
badly bruised
and swollen, but, even so, with a spinal cord injury it is
impossible to
predict how recovery will progress, or if it will continue to
progress at
all.
So please, PLEASE keep praying for Maria and her continued daily
strength
improvements. She knows it will be a long hard road to recovery,
but with
your support and prayers she can keep experiencing the miracle of
movement
and she can continue to believe in herself and her full recovery.
We are not sure how much longer she is going to be in Reno; we are
doing
everything possible to be able to move Maria back home to Chicago,
but it is
a long, confusing and expensive process.
If you would like to send your thoughts or support to Maria,
please e-mail
me. I can print out your message and bring it back to her room to
read to
her--not as cute as a "get well" card, but a heck of a
lot faster.
Again, all your support is huge, thank you!
Love,
megan

Maria Mazzocco, a gymnast from Palatine High School
class of '96 was a talented club gymnast. With her athletic
talent and drive she taught herself to snowboard and went on to
become the women's snowboarding champion in 2003. She was
living in Mammoth California this summer. This Sunday she had
a bad accident, fell and broke her neck. She is paralyzed
right now and so I am asking for support and a prayer from the
gymnastics community and anyone who remembers, went to school with
or knows Maria through other activities. Thanks in advance for
your time and prayers for her recovery.

To Friends of Grete Treiber (the Hungarian Queen!)
Grete is retiring from Indiana State Univ. after a 46 year career of
teaching Physical Education and coaching Women's Gymnastics. As we
are sure all of you remember, Grete hosted several of the USAG
National Compulsory Workshops, was a Brevet judge for years, judging
several international competitions, and was a pioneer for Women's

1988 for her many contributions to the USAG Women's Gymnastics
Program.
Since many of us are not able to attend her retirement /celebration
at Indiana State Univ. in Terre Haute on May 7, we wanted to give
Grete a scrapbook filled with letters of congratulation or fun
memories from her many Gymnastics friends all over the country. If
you could get your letters to us by APRIL 25. That
will give us time to assemble the scrapbook and get it to Grete in
time for her retirement celebration. Please include your address
and/or phone number with your letter for Grete. You can send your
letter any one of the following ways – mail, fax, or e-mail. We
look forward to hearing from you to make Grete’s retirement even
more special.

A KAT (Kinder

the preschool-age child, safety considerations unique to young

Gymnastics launched the KAT course in 1995, it
