In Memory of Skip Eckert

It is with great sadness that Region 5 is mourning the unexpected loss of a great coach, mentor and friend, Skip Eckert.

Skip has had a long history with the sport of gymnastics.  He and his wife, Connie were the owners of The Gymnastics Academy of Cleveland in Ohio.   He has, also, worked at West Side Gymnastics, Classics Gymnastics, and has currently worked at PowerHouse Gymnastics for the last eight years.

Skip’s greatest gift was the ability to make each child feel special, confident and capable of anything he thought they could accomplish.  They are stronger because of his constant encouragement and tireless dedication.

Our heartfelt sympathies are with his family.

Region 5 Congress: Your Thoughts?

Many thanks to all of those who planned and participated in this year’s Region 5 Congress, including the clinicians who presented, the volunteers who kept things running on schedule, the vendors, everyone that donated items for the live and silent auctions, and Lynn Moskowitz and her USA Gymnastics staff.   Many sessions this year were standing room only – the nearly 700 attendees and a sold out banquet broke an attendance record.  A special thanks to the hard work of the Region 5 Administrative Committee on getting the banquet and auction organized.

The banquet, emceed by Mary Lee Tracy, was outstanding.  We honored the following new inductees into the Region 5 Hall of Fame:  Connie Maloney, Bridget Sloan and Gary Warren.  This season’s Elite Athletes and All Star Team Members were also introduced—congratulations to all award winners, gymnasts, coaches, and teams on their many successes.  We look forward to an exciting and productive competitive season.

If you were able to attend one or more of this year’s sessions, please feel free to forward any suggestions for future topics or presenters to me at d.b.stiles@comcast.net.  Areas of interest could include gymnastics technique (including bio-mechanics), conditioning and flexibility, nutrition, sports psychology, sports medicine, business, recreation and preschool classes.   If you didn’t have a chance to attend, please let us know what would be a motivator for you to attend next year’s mini congress.  Both the Administrative Committee and I would like to know your thoughts.  Next year’s event will be in Columbus, OH on September 12 – 14.

In Memory of Doug Rowe

Region 5 is mourning the loss of one of our own, Doug Rowe.  Doug was owner and head coach of Michigan Academy of Gymnastics. He served our Region by representing Michigan on the Region 5 Committee.  He was a mentor to so many Region 5 athletes. His willingness to share his knowledge and love of our sport was both admirable and inspiring.  We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
